Our middle school start and end times (i.e. bell times) have consistently been 8:45 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. since the 2008-2009 school year.   Prior to the 2008-2009 school year, bell times for the middle schools was 9:10 a.m. to 3:55 p.m.  Under the current schedule, we have struggled with our ability to support “on time” afternoon transportation at middle schools. These delays have also impacted after school athletics and other activities that rely upon availability of drivers to support their transportation needs.

As a general rule, the Transportation Department requires at least 40 minutes between tiers to help ensure that our drivers can complete their route and then stage at the next tier (school level). The 40 minutes is critical as it allows adequate time to ensure that delays in one tier (due to accidents, construction, weather, etc.) have minimized impact on a subsequent tier.

Currently, there are only 32 minutes between the end of the school days of high schools and middle schools, which leads to the consistent late arrival and delays that some schools and routes are facing.

As a result of thiswe want to notify all middle school families that we will be adjusting the bell times by 10 minutes for the 2017-2018 school year to 8:55 a.m.-3:40 p.m.  The ten minute adjustment should help improve the departure time on a daily basis for several of our schools and routes.

With this change, extra-curricular activities will also be slightly adjusted to align with the new bell times.  Generally speaking, start times of events before and after school will begin ten minutes later than the current school year.  Coaches and activity sponsors will continue to communicate schedules in advance of their season to parents and students.

The ten early release days on the school calendar will also be adjusted to begin at 8:55 a.m. and end at 1:25 p.m.

As always, we want to thank you for your continued support of our schools and students.  We are hopeful that this slight time change will positively impact our school transportation services for students and families.
